Review
SolarWinds VM Monitor is a free application developed by people from SolarWinds, and it joins a pretty long list of free tools available to download form their Internet Site. What the VM Monitor does is allowing IT administrators to continuously monitor VMware ESX servers along with their virtual machines by providing real-time monitoring of VMware ESX health indicators.
The system requirements to run SolarWinds VM Monitor are as follow:
• Install on a 32-bit or 64-bit edition of one of the following operating systems:
o Microsoft Windows XP
o Microsoft Windows Vista
o Microsoft Windows Server 2003
• .NET Framework: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later.
• Hard Drive space: 10MB
Let’s see some information regarding the configuring process for SolarWinds VM Monitor. The first time you run the SolarWinds VM Monitor, you will need to set your server details and warning thresholds. If you want to change any configuration at a later time, just click to open the Settings window. The parameters to configure are the following:
• ESX Server: Type the IP address or host name of the VMware ESX Server.
• SNMP Version: Select the version of SNMP used to communicate with the Server.
• Community String: Type the community string used to collect SNMP data from the server.
• CPU Utilization (% Used): Sets the warning thresholds for the server CPU load.
• Memory (% Used): Sets the warning thresholds for the memory used by the server.
• Show only running VMs: Hides virtual machines not currently running.
• Minimize on Start: Minimize the application to the system tray at startup.
You can also change the SNMP Timeout or SNMP Retries values, by clicking on the “Advanced” button.
As you can see this is an extremely easy-to-use yet very useful application. Under normal conditions, other the configuration process, all you are going to see if VM Monitor is a little icon on your system tray. |
